The joke goes something like this:

An author sends a manuscript of his latest book to an editor. Later, the author and the editor talk. The author asks what the editor thought about the book.

"I wasn't impressed, to be honest," says the editor. "It's a pretty typical coming of age story."

"What about the twist?" complains the author.

"The only twist is that its characters are dogs instead of people," the editor replies. "It still feels awfully derivative."

"Well," the author sighs. "I thought it was novel."
