Just doing some reading.

You see, it's funny because the monster from Dungeons & Dragons called a beholder largely consists of a big eye, and if someone is private, that means that they don't share details of their personal life freely. Additionally, "private eye" is a term usually used to refer to independent detectives. Thus, a private eye could be either a detective or a beholder that doesn't share details about himself.
